Chatting Away is a mobile and remote Children’s Speech and Language Therapy Service based in St. Albans, Hertfordshire.

Therapy is available locally, in neighbouring boroughs and counties, or online via video chat.

The service is designed for pre-schoolers and primary and secondary school students with speech, language and communication difficulties.

About Laura


I am passionate about helping children to develop their communication so they can realise their full potential. My aim is to ensure that children have the skills they need to communicate effectively, whether this means feeling more confident making friends, accessing learning in the classroom with greater success, or conveying basic wants and needs for those with more complex challenges. It is important to me that therapy is motivating and enjoyable, rather than a chore. I find this not only increases the child’s participation during sessions, but also their willingness to practise and implement communication strategies in everyday life.

I have always been fascinated by languages and communication and sought a career in which I could use my language skills practically to help others. After completing a Bachelors Degree in French and Spanish at Bristol University, I pursued my interests by going on to complete a Masters in Language Pathology (Speech and Language Therapy) at Newcastle University.

Experience


I have several years of experience as a Speech and Language Therapist in the NHS. I have worked across a variety of settings, including clinics, nurseries, mainstream schools, special needs schools and additionally resourced provisions. Alongside my independent work, I continue to work in the NHS specialising in deafness. I have a British Sign Language Level 1 qualification and am currently working on Level 2.

I have worked with a diverse population of children with varying communication needs and profiles, including:

Speech sound delay and disorder
Language difficulties and disorder
Social communication difficulties and Autism Spectrum Disorder
Complex medical and communication needs
Deafness
Children with English as an additional language
Stammering
Reluctant talking and Selective Mutism
Voice

I am able to provide a wide range of therapies to support children to develop their attention and listening, play and social interaction, understanding/use of language, speech, fluency and confidence.

I have delivered a variety of training sessions to parents, teaching staff and colleagues regarding the use of communication strategies and therapies.

Professional Memberships & Checks


I am a member of the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT) and the Association of Speech and Language Therapists in Independent Practice (ASLTIP). I am registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC), Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) and have an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check.

Therapy Services


I offer a range of Speech and Language Therapy services, including:

Telephone consultation

If you have concerns about your child’s speech, language and/or communication, please feel free to get in contact with me to further discuss these. I can provide some general communication advice over the phone based on the type of concerns outlined. If considered appropriate, we can book in an assessment.

Initial assessment

The first appointment will consist of an initial assessment of your child’s speech, language and communication skills. This can be carried out at your home, your child’s school or remotely. It will involve obtaining a case history, getting to know your child and carrying out an observation and assessment. A report can be requested.

Therapy sessions

These will be personalised sessions for your child targeting the development of specific speech, language and/or communication skills identified during the initial assessment. We will also discuss therapy activities and communication strategies, enabling you to support your child between therapy sessions. Speech and Language Therapy resources will be provided.

Re-assessment

Re-assessment may take the form of observations, structured assessment and liaison with staff and parents/carers. A progress or discharge report will follow the re-assessment.

School Service

Schools can book assessments and therapy for their students. I can deliver therapy to students individually or in groups. I am also able to provide a range of training sessions for staff members.

Teletherapy

Therapy can be provided online via Skype or FaceTime. Interaction will take place in real time with the child and parents/school staff. This enables therapy to be accessed more flexibly, whilst also overcoming potential barriers of distance.

Attendance at professionals meetings

Information about your child's communication skills and therapy progress can be presented at review/progress meetings.


Children can be seen for Speech and Language Therapy at home or in school depending on preference.
